OBD diagnostic check

Car diagnostic inspection before you buy

We read the car's computer for stored and hidden faults, then check the rest of the car, because not every problem sets a code.

Computer diagnostics

What a diagnostic scan tells you about a used car

Cars sold in the UAE in recent decades have an OBD (on-board diagnostics) port. Plugging a scanner into it lets the inspector read what the car's control units have recorded.

  • Stored fault codes — faults the car has detected and logged, such as misfires or sensor failures
  • Pending codes — intermittent problems that haven't yet turned on a warning light
  • Readiness monitors — whether the car's self-tests have run. Monitors that aren't ready can be a sign that codes were recently cleared
  • Live data — such as coolant temperature and sensor readings while the engine runs

Diagnostics vs full inspection

Why a scan alone is not enough

A diagnostic scan is one part of a pre-purchase inspection, not a replacement for it.

A diagnostic scan can show

  • Faults the car's computers have detected
  • Signs that codes were recently cleared
  • Problems with sensors, emissions and electronic systems
  • Some airbag and safety system faults

A scan cannot show

  • Accident repairs and repainted panels
  • Worn brakes, tyres, bushes or suspension
  • Oil leaks, rust and underbody damage
  • Many mechanical problems that never trigger a code

Included in every package

Diagnostics are part of every Car Inspect inspection

Advanced computer diagnostics (OBD scan) is included in both the Pro and Premium packages, alongside the physical inspection and road test. We interpret the results in context, because a code means more when the inspector can also see, hear and drive the car.

FAQ

Diagnostic inspection questions

Do you offer a diagnostic scan on its own?

Our diagnostic scan is part of the Pro and Premium pre-purchase inspections, because a scan without a physical inspection can miss serious problems.

If there are no fault codes, is the car fine?

Not necessarily. Many mechanical problems, accident repairs and wear items never create a fault code. That is why we combine diagnostics with a physical inspection and road test.

Can a seller hide fault codes?

Codes can be cleared, but clearing them also resets the readiness monitors. An inspector can often spot this. Pending codes and live data can also point to problems.
